In the past year, hundreds of articles have been written about young children's transition to school and/ or literacy development. In fact, several professional organizations have devoted entire issues to these two related topics. Examples include the March 2003 issue of Young Children, which focused on early literacy, and the April 2003 issue of Educational Leadership, which highlighted the first years of school. The following articles were selected from hundreds used in collecting background research information for the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Ready to Learn in School Project, funded by the Mayer Electric Foundation.
